History

Arthur J. Van Lerberghe Funeral Home has been serving St. Clair Shores area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

Arthur J. Van Lerberghe Funeral Home, originally Van Lerberghe Funeral Home, began in 1900 when Henry Van Lerberghe opened his home and business doors across from the Mt. Elliott cemetery and two blocks away from St. Bonaventure Monastery, better known as the Capuchin Monastery, in Detroit. His goal was to create a personal, intimate atmosphere he thought to be only appropriate for grieving family members.

Henry and his son Arthur J. continued to run the business at this location for several years where they buried numerous Capuchin monks. It is at this location that Henry was anointed by the celebrated Father Solanus Casey before his death in 1957. After his passing, the funeral home was taken over by his son Arthur.

Soon after Arthur moved the business with the help of his son Arthur J., Jr., next to St. John Berchmans Church in Detroit. Due to the closeness that Arthur J. and Henry had shared with the Capuchins, Arthur J. had the original honor of burying Father Solanus Casey in 1957, and helping in the exhumation of his remains in 1987, and inter the remains in the monastery itself where he rests today.

In 1973, Arthur J. Van Lerberghe Funeral Home moved to its present day location in St. Clair Shores. In 1983 Arthur Jr. passed away, leaving his daughter Karen Van Lerberghe-Slocum and son Greg Van Lerberghe to work in the family business. Just 7 years later, in 1989, Arthur J. Van Lerberghe died, followed not long after by his wife Ethel.

The funeral home was completely taken over at that time by Arthur’s granddaughter Karen. It was Arthur J. Van Lerberghe’s wish to keep the business in the family and Karen has honored these wishes, making the Arthur J. Van Lerberghe Funeral Home the only family-owned and operated funeral home in St. Clair Shores.
